It Worked For Us…

Tree Planting To Mark Christian Education Month

By Gerald Purcell

Each year our church observes September as Christian Education Month. During the month we hold a number of special events and activities to help promote and draw attention to our Christian education programs, particularly the Sunday school. In past years we have had a balloon launch on one of the Sundays; but with the increased concern about the environment and the safety of balloon launches for birds and fish, we decided we didn’t want to hold another balloon launch and would try to come up with something else we could do. One of our committee members suggested holding a tree planting ceremony and this is what we decided to do.

We had everyone gather in the church yard on the Sunday selected and held a short ceremony where we planted a tree as a symbol of the planting of God’s Word through our Christian education program. We had a short service with scripture, prayer and a short reading. We also tried to involve all of the children by letting each place a small shovel of dirt in the hole to help plant the tree.
