It Worked For Us…

Point System Helps Kids Learn

By Eleanor L. Lyons

I teach a combined class of 5th and 6th graders. We have a point system that the children love, and work hard for the prize at the end of each quarter. I give 50 points for learning the memory verse, 25 points for bringing their Bible, and 25 points for attendance. Then once a month I give them a bonus of 100 points for doing an extra work sheet. This is usually a "do at home" project. At the end of each quarter, I add up the points and I give money for the prize. The children love the money, and the average teacher could never afford a prize the children would like. My prize system was cleared with my pastor. Every September I send a letter to the parents explaining my prize system, because it is important that they know why their child is bringing money home from Sunday school. Every child gets a prize. I call those who have not totally participated "honorable mention," and they get a candy bar.
